Nowadays, it’s incredibly common to see former athletes step into the cannabis industry. They, more than the average marijuana enthusiast, know exactly how beneficial weed can be. I mean, there’s really no denying it at this point. In fact, any of those who still consider this a “hardcore” or “gateway” drug are dramatically misinformed. Sadly, there’s a lot of those misguided folks meandering around Capitol Hill – but that’s neither here nor there.

These beloved sportsmen and women are proud to use their fame and retirement years as advocates for cannabis. With a handful of them actually producing, distributing, and selling their very own products. And, honestly, why the hell not? They already have a proven fanbase from their years of playing sports, so why not utilize that fame (and fortune) to step into the super-profitable cannabis industry? Makes nothing but sense to me.

And there’s already a litany of respected athletes that are doing just that. Hell, there’s even a few strains that are named after some of the country’s most looked-up-to superstars. But, more often than not, those are just floral tributes to that particular grower’s favorite player. Rare are the instances in which an ex-athlete actually comes out with their very own strain named after themselves.

But don’t tell that to former NBA legend, Gary Payton. Because after teaming up with the beloved Cookies brand, he has come out with a truly stunning hybrid strain that is quickly becoming a household name.

Aptly titled, Gary Payton, this hybrid is incredible in every way possible. And for it to be released on the verge of the NBA’s preseason is more than appropriate.

Many may not be aware of this little factoid, but Gary Payton was born and raised in Oakland, California. This is probably one of the most weed-friendly cities in the entire state. For years, residents have migrated to this famous East Bay town to secure themselves some of the best bud on the market. Hell, even the global cannabis giants, Cookies, is based out of Oakland. Which is why it was only a matter of time before these two forces linked up to create some sincerely stunning cannabis.

For those millennials out there, Gary Payton was an absolute monster on the court. Affectionately referred to as “The Glove” his quickness and brutal defense often resulted in a litany of steals and assists. In short, he was majoritively known for his defense. Which, as one could imagine, is probably the toughest part of playing in the NBA – so for him to excel in such a difficult, physically demanding aspect of the game is nothing short of admirable.

Currently, this super-potent strain is only sold in eighths. And, uh, let’s just say, they ain’t cheap. Customers have been known to pay $70 per eighth! Such a price point is indicative of the strength of this bud. And if anyone is on the fence about forking over that much currency for some ganja, they’ve already wasted too much time – because these continue to fly off the shelves the second they go on sale. So, it’s just better to pick some up before it’s completely gone.

NBA Legend, Gary Payton Released His Very Own Strain - And It's Amazing

When discussing this latest partnership with Payton, Berner, a rapper and co-founder of Cookies wasn’t shy about his admiration for the legendary baller. Of whom, Berner said, “This is like the Wheaties box for the weed game and we were the first to pop it off. What makes it best is the bag behind it is so fire.”

He’s not lying. The custom bag that these buds nestle themselves in is incredibly cool. The classic sky blue bag that the Cookies brand is known for serves as the artistic background to this epic artistic interpretation of Gary Payton, himself, on the front.

A screaming Payton can be seen showcasing his strength on these bags, and that’s a strong indication of the potency that’s packed beneath. In short, these bags stand out amongst a crowd of otherwise mundane designs – and anything that can catch the eye of the eager cannabis consumer is always a plus.

Much like his powerful performances on the court, these buds do not disappoint when it comes to looks, scent, or effects. Typically, when one buys an eighth, a handful of buds make up the required 3.5-gram amount. But with Gary Payton from Cookies, customers are prone to pop open this iconic bag and find a massive, dense 3.5-gram nug waiting for them.

And the aesthetics of this strain are next-level. Dark purple flowers mix and mingle with greener hues, as frosty tufts of orange hairs spring their way to the sky. Every single centimeter of this bud is phenomenal, it’s hard to look away – it’s that incredible! And the scent profile of this potent hybrid is unlike any other on the market – and the taste of this strain was even better.

While the appearance and whatnot of this bud are fantastic, it really comes down to effects at the end of the day. And this hybrid, ladies and gentlemen, does not play around with its strong series of mental and physical benefits. Some hybrids strike a balance between body and mind, but this powerfully potent strain is pretty sedating, to be quite honest.

Sure, there’s a high degree of “spaciness” to be enjoyed with this cerebrally cleansing strain, but the way it sort of launches the consumer into a realm of deep serenity, makes it feel like time is passing by at a super-fast rate – because after smoking Gary Payton, you’ll look up and realize a massive chunk of time has gone by since your last puff. Which, in turn, essentially means there’s a wealth of “couch lock” to be expected with this bud.

There’s also a healthy case of “munchies” as well – so go into this session knowing that your tummy will be rumbling shortly thereafter. Given this series of effects, I’d say that this hybrid is best used to sit back, relax, and consume some quality entertainment or create something. But as far as functionality goes, I’d say that this one is leaning more on the sedative side of the fence. Which is completely fine. In fact, it’s better than fine – it’s amazing!

The grower of this bud crossed the strains The Y and Snowman to create this amazing hybrid. And after completing 20 interpretations of the cross, Kenny Powers, the Cookies cultivating genius behind this flower, deemed that it was officially ready to be enjoyed. And the number 20 is a bit significant because that was Gary Payton’s number when he played. So, talk about kismet, right?

Cookies is handling this top-shelf bud with the utmost exclusivity, by only dropping a handful of them in their stores at a time. But the hype that’s already being generated around this strong hybrid is through the roof.

Everyone that smokes this bud is beyond happy (and hungry) with their experience, and it’s easy to see why. Gary Payton is a sincerely awesome strain and I’d strongly urge any and all of my fellow marijuana enthusiasts to pick this up if they’re ever lucky enough to spot on the menu at their local dispensary – you’ll be happy you did. Trust me.
